Truth to Power - Episode 60
On this week's episode of #TruthtoPower, IntelStor's Founder & CEO, Philip Totaro digs into the LCOE, feed in tariffs, public finance and capital efficiency of the global solid #biofuels market from the IntelStor Future of Renewables #marketresearch Report.
Feed in tariffs (FiTs) for solid biofuels have an average range from US$89.58 – US111.71 / MWhr, but ranging upwards of US$300.00 / MWhr in some countries in the Americas, Asia Pacific and European regions as well. Such high FiT prices underscore how the asset owners of solid biofuels are able to achieve profitability, but as noted in the study of solid biofuels LCOE, such the industry would not be as competitive as other renewable energy technologies without such generous support. Prices are now below US$150 / MWhr across Europe as well as the Asia Pacific regions, which still provide modest subsidies to support prices.
A total of US$81.8 billion in public funding has been allocated to solid biofuels in the past 25 years with Africa & the Middle East taking a total of 35%. For solid biofuels in the Africa & Middle East region, the figure of just under US$8.4 million per installed megawatt with a total of US$28.7 billion of funding allocated over the past 25 years is the worst performance in the entire renewable energy industry. While we cannot point directly to incompetence or corruption at this time, this discrepancy warrants further investigation to understand how that much public funding could be deployed with so few results.
This show examines data driven insights for the energy sector, with a focus on renewables. To subscribe to IntelStor Research Notes and get early access to our latest content as well as these Truth to Power weekly editorials, visit https://lnkd.in/e98Z9qs3
